Edwin H. Land

Edwin Herbert land who was born on May 7, 1909 was an American Scientist and inventor. He was the co-founder of the Polaroid Corporation. He invented inexpensive filters for polarizing light, which is a practical system of in camera instant photography. His Polaroid instant camera went on sale in 1948.

This Camera made it possible for a picture to be taken and developed in 60 seconds or less. In the 1950’s, Edwin discovered a two-colour system for projecting the entire spectrum of hues with only two colours of projecting light. In 1957, Harvard University awarded him an honorary doctorate and Edwin H. Land Blvd, a street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was later named in his memory. Edwin considered his leadership towards the development of integral instant colour photography and the SX-70 film and camera to be his best achievements. The SX-70 camera is a folding single lens reflex Land camera which was produced by the Polaroid Corporation.

Edwin H. Land died on March 1, 1991 at the age of 81. Upon his death his personal assistant shredded his personal papers and notes. In conclusion, Edwin Herbert Land was a fabulous scientist with an amazing artistic vision who should be remembered as an amazing inventor of the Polaroid camera that we still know of today.
