This photo was taken in 1925 in Owen Sound. If you live in Owen Sound you will recognize this as the grain elevator that is right near the water on the west side. I find this interesting because it shows the construction of it. It’s crazy to think about how this was almost 100 years ago in a place we live today.
This second photo shows children who are working. Child labor was a completely normal thing in the 1800 because they didn’t have any child protection laws that we have today. Children often worked in coal mines, chimney sweep, factory work, rail station, farm work, domestic servants, rat catchers and a lot of other jobs that children should not be doing. Orphans were often taken and put into slavery, and then put back on the streets when they were too big to be chimney sweepers. Throughout the 1800 the laws of child labor grew. By the end of the 1800 the law was that any child under the age of 16 was not aloud to be a full time worker. I find this interesting because we can see a complete difference from 200 years ago to today.
